Belconnen Leisure Centre

Michael Davies Architecture’s unique submission proposed a ‘build, own and operate’ (“BOO”) arrangement whereby the facility could be funded without the ACT Government having to commit more than its intended budget. To achieve the BOO arrangement; Michael Davies Architecture formed alliance partnerships with LeisureCo, an ice rink operator, a financial institution, and a local contractor.

We expanded on the ACT Department of Education and Community Services’ brief, proposing a complete leisure and lifestyle centre including indoor aquatic centre, indoor ice rink, pamper facilities, sports medicine clinic including a hydrotherapy suite, food court, commercial suites, a retail component and student housing associated with the nearby University of Canberra.

The inclusion of the ice skating rink in the project enabled energy-sharing between it and the indoor pools, saving significant operating costs over the life cycle of the centre.
